“丢脸”可以译为"lose face", 在字典中查询face可以看到这个表达,它的意思是be humiliated-to be less respected or look stupid because of sth you have done 丢脸,失面子。
✨shame [n.]
meaning: the loss of respect that is caused when you do sth wrong or stupid
e.g. There's no shame in wanting to be successful.
✨disgraceful [adj.]
meaning: very bad or unacceptable; that people should feel ashamed about 不光彩的;丢脸的
e.g. His behaviour is absolutely disgraceful!
✨have/be left with egg on your face
meaning: to be made to look stupid
e.g. They were left with egg on their faces when only ten people showed up.
-party animal: someone likes to party a lot
-chicken: someone who is cowardly 胆小鬼
-dog: someone to be looked down upon
-pig: someone who behaves rudely or who eats a lot
-dove: terms of affection between lovers
-long time no see 很久不见
-Strike while the iron is hot.
The Chinese face can be washed, shaven; and what’s more, it can be lost, offered (if one is offered face, he or she is done the honor), vied for (if one vies for face, he or she wins honor) and saved. Sometimes it is of primary importance for the Chinese to “vie for face”, so much so that they would sacrifice all their property. This is at best typical Chinese egalitarianism——in dealing with others, one should avoid getting them cornered. Though an attitude of ego-linked wisdom bred of the vague awareness of karma/retribution, it is after all the manifestation of magnanimity(kindness and generosity). At worst with face comes the matter of injustice: a person with “face” (a prestigious figure) enjoys all the comforts of luxury and pomp and is superior to law, whereas a person without “face” (an average figure) is always subject to the authority of the government and the dignity of law. Therefore, as far as I’m concerned, if we disregard all our faces, the rule of law can really be realized and, accordingly, the country can become rich and mighty. For instance, according to traffic regulations, the speed limit for average persons is 35 miles per hour; however, the cars of a high official can drive pompously at a speed of 50-60 miles per hour. If by any chance(一般强调,用在疑问句 Is Mr Sands awake by any chance?) it knocked a passer-by to death, the high official would merely show the policeman his business card and stalk(walk in an angry or proud way) off with a swelling face. If the policeman was so impetuously inflexible as to deny his departure, the official would abu
